Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) and the ISV

SOA allows IT services to be reused and reassembled into new, composite applications resulting in reduced development, maintenance and integration costs. The services might consist of distributed items of business logic or full applications.  The plumbing is based on open standards that binds the services together regardless of platform.

The opportunity

Many smaller businesses have focused their limited IT skills on their Microsoft infrastructure. As a result, a third party application running on Oracle may well be disconnected from the rest of the infrastructure.  SOA provides an opportunity to make the data held in such systems available to the rest of organisation.  The ISV can extend the value of their third party applications through cross-platform integration.

SOA also opens up opportunities for creating a new breed of applications.  Over the past few years, a combination of acquisitions and new product delivery has transformed Oracle’s Middleware, SOA and BPA offering into an industry leading, open and standards based suite of products that can be used for the development of modular business services.

As well as helping to maximise existing IT assets, SOA encourages the deployment of best of breed products such as Oracle Database 11g and Microsoft Visual Studio.
