Migration
Migration is an important consideration for many ISVs. As an ISV, you may be concerned about moving a customer from an earlier to newer edition of Oracle to support your application and to provide access to the latest technology. Or you may be concerned about moving from one Oracle technology to another, eg Oracle Forms to Oracle Application Express. Migration could also involve porting your application or your customer's computing infrastructure from one platform to another. Over the coming weeks, we will be adding information resources to address migration issues from the ISV perspective. Oracle provides many resources to assist in migrating ISV solutions, including a specialist centre in the UK where advice and porting facilities are available to assist.
Getting started
Moving data physically from a SQL Server or Microsoft Access database to an Oracle Database Server is a relatively simple process. The free SQL Developer tool provides substantial capabilities for modelling the metadata and transferring data. Stored Procedures can also be translated into Oracle's PL/SQL language.
Migrating an existing application to Oracle Database Server requires an understanding of Oracle's unique features. For example, the locking and concurrency model ensures readers and writers of data do not block each other - and yet data is always presented in a transactionally consistent form. The result is that some application code that attempted to work around scalability issues can be amended to a simpler and more natural expression of the business need.
